Cleaning wounds

Security Trauma Training

Security Trauma Training

Most wounds are simple and basic to clean. Except in a remote environment. We need to make sure infection is prevented by cleansing each wound. Also re assess the patient and mechanism of injury for future prevention. Using a wound cleansing soap such as Chlorhexidine Gluconate/Cetrimide for wounds with the addition of an Iodine type solution for cleaning. A final dressing should be a moist dressing using Inadine type dressing. ! Remember to reassess!

Honey for wounds

Security Trauma Training

How much is too much

Certain kinds of honey can be beneficial for wounds and burns. Its because of the way the bees digest pollen and regurgitate helps it act as an antimicrobial. Also honey has no H2O in in and is highly acidic. Those features make it difficult for bacteria to grow. So caring a couple spare honey packets in your kit can not only give you an energy boost, but may also be beneficial in preventing infection. Always clean a wound properly and if its all you have, then its worth a try until you get to the care you need.

Sea Lice

•Sea lice bites are actually jellyfish larvae stings that form a rash after you swim in the ocean. After swimming in warm ocean waters, some bathers discover a red itchy rash on the skin under their bathing suit.

•Treatment: An antihistamine pill or steroid cream can help relieve the itch. If you have a more severe case, your doctor may prescribe a steroid pill or shot. You can also apply colloidal oatmeal cream or calamine lotion to soothe the itch while the rash heals

Drowning on Pleasure Yachts: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Drowning is a tragic and preventable event that can happen anywhere, including on pleasure yachts. According to the United States Coast Guard, there were 613 boating fatalities in 2019, with drowning being the leading cause of death in recreational boating accidents. In this blog post, we'll explore the percentage of drowning victims who were not wearing a life jacket, the percentage of boating accidents caused by propellers, and who is most at risk. We'll also provide tips on how to avoid this tragedy and links to rescue training resources to be prepared.

What Percentage of Drowning Victims Were Not Wearing a Life Jacket?

Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective ways to prevent drowning while on a pleasure yacht. According to the U.S. Coast Guard's 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics, 84.5% of drowning victims in boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket. This statistic highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times while on the water.

What Percentage of Boating Accidents Were Caused by a Propeller?

Propeller strikes can cause serious injury or death, and they are a significant cause of boating accidents. According to the U.S. Coast Guard's 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics, there were 175 reported propeller strikes, resulting in 31 deaths and 154 injuries. This represents approximately 4.4% of all reported boating accidents. Propeller guards can help reduce the risk of injury or death from propeller strikes.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Children and young adults are most at risk for drowning on pleasure yachts. According to the U.S. Coast Guard's 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics, 70% of all fatal boating accident victims drowned, and of those, 86% were not wearing a life jacket. Children under 13 years of age accounted for 13% of all boating fatalities, and 56% of them drowned.

Tips for Avoiding Drowning on Pleasure Yachts

There are several steps you can take to avoid drowning on pleasure yachts:

  1. Wear a life jacket at all times while on the water, even if you're a strong swimmer.
  2. Take a boating safety course and follow all safety guidelines.
  3. Don't drink alcohol while operating a pleasure yacht or while on board.
  4. Make sure your pleasure yacht is properly maintained and equipped with all required safety equipment.
  5. Keep a lookout for potential hazards, including other boats and swimmers in the water.
  6. Stay informed about weather conditions and avoid going out in inclement weather.
  7. Always have a rescue plan in place and make sure everyone on board knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Rescue Training Resources

It's important for crew members on pleasure yachts to be trained in rescue techniques and first aid. One resource for rescue training is Docside Medic, which provides training on how to be a "first responder" and respond to medical and trauma emergencies. Their training includes resuscitation skills such as basic life support and advanced life support.

Drowning on pleasure yachts is a preventable tragedy. By following these tips and staying informed, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience for all.
